Why was there a crusade?

Because in March of 1095, Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos had petitioned Pope Urban II of the Catholic Church for help in defending his kingdom which was being attacked by Muslim Turks. Emperor Alexios was hoping that western knights could help his kingdom retake the large swaths of land lost to the Turks. The Pope and numerous nobles from Kingdoms and the Church met at the Council of Piacenza to discuss another matter entirely until the ambassador from the Byzantines arrived. This Crusade would serve several purposes, it would assist the Byzantines, thus strengthening relations between the West and East, and would hopefully re-take Jerusalem and other cities from the Muslim Turks, which had been a priority for many Catholic monarchs, but was not shared by Urban II. In otherwords, they tried to take back the Holy Land from the Muslims. But after the final Crusade, The Muslims maintained controll of the Holy Land.

Who sent the Crusaders?

Ultimately, it was Pope Blessed Urban II [c. 1035-July 29, 1099] who sent the Crusaders. He was born Otho de Lagery in Italy. He became Pope on March 12, 1088. Seven years later, he met with an ambassador from Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos [1048-August 15, 1118]. The ambassador relayed an urgent request for help against the followers of Islam in Turkey. Muslims successfully had challenged Byzantine Christian control over the Anatolian region of Turkey.Eight months later, on November 27, 1095, the Pope called for attendees of the Council of Clermont to counter Islam's control over the Holy Land and the growing Muslim challenge to Christendom. His call launched the First Crusade. The Crusade officially began on August 15, 1096. It officially ended with the Battle of Ascalon, on August 12, 1099.
