Before the Civil War the North was the more industrialized region, and this continued after the war. The North became more urban. The South, where most of the fighting occurred, slowly reconstructed itself in the face of Northern economic and political discrimination, and adopted an almost-feudal agricultural economy consisting of small farmers, share croppers and tenant farmers.
The north didn't have slavery, but did have discrimination. The south did have active overt slavery where people were considered property.

They had different ideas on slavery, where the North was against slavery, the South was for it. Another difference between North and South at the time were the growth of cities, while the South didn't have many city life areas the North was full of them and were continuting to create more cities at the time.
