During the most recent Ice Age, much of the world's water was in the form of glaciers. They covered roughly half of North America and were from one to three kilometers thick.
As a result, the sea level dropped several hundred feet. At present, the ocean is fairly shallow between Alaska and Russia. When the level of the oceans dropped, the sea bed between Alaska and Russia became dry land.
The prevailing theory is that humans just continued to spread normally across what is called the land bridge. Another theory is that humans sailed across the 50 mile gap between Alaska and Russia.
