Elizabeth says her love for Darcy appeared so gradually, she cannot really say when it began. She jokes that it started when she saw Pemberly, implying that she fell in love when she could see with her own eyes how rich he was, but Jane, to whom she is talking, laughs at this and asks her to be serious.
Mr. Darcy's lines that suggest he is questioning his judgment and falling in love with Elizabeth are: "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you."
Elizabeth realizes she would accept Darcy's proposal, if he gave it, in Chapter 50, when she realizes that with Lydia's marriage to Wickham, a proposal from Darcy is probably impossible.
When she sees that Lydia is marrying Wickham, she thinks about Darcy and her own family. Darcy has very good reasons to avoid Wickham, and Elizabeth believes he would not marry a woman who was as closely related to him as she was to be herself, a sister-in-law. The connection she would soon have with Wickham would be reprehensible to him. At this point, she comes to realize that he is probably the one person best suited to her as a husband.
She is infuriated and she rejects him, enumerating the reasons why she is so angry with him, stressing she would have turned down his proposal of marriage even if he had made it "in a more gentleman-like manner".
Mr. Darcy gave Elizabeth a letter that explained his actions.

Pliancy of temper means compliant, easily persuaded by friends to do what he knows they want, rather than some other thing he might want, but they would not enjoy.
