A Chinese monk named Li Tian invented fireworks about 1,000 years ago. The earliest recorded use of gunpowder in England, and probably the western world, is by the Franciscan monk Roger Bacon.
Legend has it that Marco Polo brought this new accidental invention to the West from one of his many trips to China and other Eastern countries
Get started as in set off would be done by lighting the firework but if you mean how did fireworks get invented, it was because on November 5th ages ago( not sure when!) Guy Forks tried to blow up the houses of Parliament, and failed. People celebrate every year by blowing something up them selves (like a firework) or setting on fire to something (like a bonfire). :)
I am pretty sure fireworks originated in China but im not entierly sure. I would guess that if they in fact did originate in China, that they were transported by foot on caravans and / or Ships.
