Horse can ride longer, walk faster, and survive easier than humans. They were suburb war animals. Horses were also the greatest transportation breakthrough since the wheel. Horse were a status symbol. As they were expensive, the more and better horses you had, the wealthier you were.

Since the Blackfoot weren't coastal people, they didn't use canoes. They usually built rafts when they traveled by river. The Blackfeet used dogs pulling travois, a kind of dog sled, before colonists brought horses over from Europe. The Blackfoot culture quickly adapted to horses and became more migratory when horses were introduced.
Horses were domesticated in central Asia and the Middle East as far back as 2500 BC and possibly earlier than this. Horses were first used for agriculture - pulling plows and carts - before they were used for riding and war.
