The Aztec diet consisted primarily of corn as a staple; combined with a variety of meats and peppers for spice. The Aztecs are also known to have participated in ritualistic cannibalism. Victims were sacrificed at temples by removal of the heart. The bodies were then dismembered and consumed by the social elite. This definitely could have contributed to the negative view of barbarism assumed by Spanish explorers.
