#2): British astronomer Norman Lockyer named it; he is jointly credited with French astronomer Jules Janssen in it's detection in sunlight during a solar eclipse in 1868. However(!)the formal discovery of helium as an element (1895) is credited to two Swedish chemists who found it coming out of the uranium ore "cleveite".
