Actually, wired telephones were available if you had the money. AM radio broadcasts were also available. Although citizens band in the modern sense was probably not around, there were ham radio operators at this time. Radios and other electronics used vacuum tubes. Many rural areas were not yet connected to the grid; but they had batteries and generators.

Bear with me if this answer is kind of long, im just not quite sure what your asking. The Great Depression started in the majority of the country in 1929. It is by far the worst financial crisis Americas ever suffered (in my opinion anyways). The Depression not only hurt us causing crime and poverty rates to go up, but international trade and other countries were hurt as well. Also, debate rages on still today wether FDR's "New Deal" (what we would call a stimulus package) helped or lengthen the period of recesion.

During the Great Depression, it was not uncommon someone to lose everything and become a vagrant. Every morning, the commuters see the same vagrant sleeping on the roadside. Some hobos, or tramps, embrace the vagrant, unfettered lifestyle.

Many hobos lived in makeshift settlements called hobo jungles, where many other people with a life situation similar to them shared the space, often in woods or alleys. Hobo had a bad reputation because many of them would steal to stay alive.
