The telegraph improved life at home because it made communication much faster and easier, Granted you needed to learn Morse Code. Communication went from sending a letter to the post office which could take long periods of time for the letter to arrive at it's destination from practically getting a home phone.

It helped save lives during a turmoil filled era in the still young history of the United States. Beforehand messages had to be hand delivered which required transportation of a letter, often through dangerous and hostile territory by horse. Other than saving countless lives, it saved an enormous amount of time and allowed for the NYSE to grow exponentially once stocks could be instantly traded over distances.

It allowed people to ccommunicate accross distances before the telephone was invented. basically the telegraph was the early version of texting but used dots and lines instead of letters called a Morse Code.
