Yes, in a way it is appropriate to say that the religions did promote (forced them (people) to look for answers themselves instead of relying on religion) Humanism because people are now finding religions being unable to answer ( even basic ) queries, like - Proof of existence of almighty. So people have just picked the rational part of religions like - manner of conduct, helping others etc. And thus formed Humanism.
