How did jesus teach about prayer?

Jesus Christ spoke many times about the subject of prayer in His teachings. But the most important issue for Christians can be found in the Holy Bible, Luke 11:1-4.

"And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a special place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."

"And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name." "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth." "Give us this day our daily bread." "And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone that is debted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil."

KNOWN AS "THE LORD'S PRAYER," Many Christians say the prayer that Jesus Christ taught us in this manner.

"Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed it be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtor's. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen."

Great question. I'm going to give you two ideas that balance out the idea of prayer. Often times, we will run into a confusion with Christian prayer, because there are verses where Jesus seems to suggest that if we just ask in His name, if we pray faithfully, if we really believe it will be done, then we'll receive whatever we ask for. This is the first half of the teaching.

Look at Matt. 21:21-2 where Jesus says "...If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." That's a pretty strong statement. Jesus is teaching us that with belief and faith, we can do amazing things through prayer.

Also examine Matt 7:11 where Jesus says "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" I made the word "ask" bold to make the point that Jesus also teaches us that God will give us greater gifts than people ever can give if we just ask Him, that is, if we pray.

How do we ask for these amazing things? Look at John 14:13-4 where Jesus says that if we ask anything "in His name," He will do it for us.

Okay that's the first "half" of the idea about prayer. Now, many people run away with that first idea about prayer, and then they're disappointed when they don't see what they asked for. So here's the second half of Jesus' prayer teaching: Jesus tells us to pray, believe and anything can be done for us, but look howand what Jesus prays for and what his motivationis.

This verse is not explicitly about prayer, but it shows Jesus' motivation in everything He does:

"So Jesus said, "When you have lifted upthe Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me.The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him" (John 8:28-3) (my bold added for emphasis).

That's the crucial element of our praying we need to pay attention to! Jesus says that, in His name, anything will be done but look how Jesus Himself acted, prayed and thought: He does nothing on His own but just what the Father taught Him. All Jesus' actions are directed toward doing what pleases the Father.

Now, finally, I'll give you an example where Jesus perfectly lives this out. in Matt. 26:39-45 Jesus knows He's going to be crucified soon, and He is so overwhelmed at the prospect that He goes to His Father and prays that, if there's any way out of this horrible death, that Father would please answer Jesus' prayer and save His only son. Jesus prays three times over:

"My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." (my emphasis added).

Immediately after this, men show up to arrest Jesus and drag Him to death.

This is kind of how we react sometimes: we pray and then it's not answered, in fact Jesus got the opposite of what He asked for, and our faith is hurt and we think "Why did you say I could ask anything in your name and it would be done?" But looking at these verses I've listed, we begin to see that it's important for us to treat our prayer as extremely powerful. So before we use it, we need to ask "Is this in your name?" because praying "in Jesus' name" doesn't just mean we say "Dear Jesus," and then get whatever we want. If we went and robbed someone and said "it's in Jesus' name" we would be liars, because Jesus would never do that. It's not in His Father's will. In this same way, use your power of prayer wisely, and check to see if the thing you're asking for is something you really believe God is okay with giving you, that you're asking for for good reasons.

By these words of Jesus and by His example, I think we see that we can receive limitless answers to prayer from God but that we have to ask with pure motivations. These are two of Jesus' teachings on prayer.
