The name "Kiwi" is derived from the latin root "kiwensis"
It origionally meant harsh warrior goes to river to catch fish. The name was applied to the fruit because they contain very similar aspects as one can easily tell.
Before it got the name "Kiwi" it was called "awonowhiew" (uh-wan-oh-HEE-oo) which loosely translated means "soft, furry rock" in Slurrian. The island of Slurri is where kiwis originated.
It comes from the sound that they make. The Maori thought that it sounded like it was saying "kiwi." It is a high pitched "keeeweee" cry.
'The kiwis' is the nickname of the New Zealand Rugby League team.
