Lady Brilliana Harley had defended her castle to the highest degrade. Prior to the breakout of the English Civil War between Parliament and Charlles I and his Royal followers (Roundheads VS Cavaliers). She had drained the moat that surrounded her castle. When the Royalist Army led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine was on the move shw flooded the moat again. This would hold off an attack.
She then enslisted the help of her cooks,maids and buttlers as well as close members of the household to help her fight, every member knew how to fire one of the 50 musketeers that were around and approx. 10 people would assist in using the siege.
Lady Brilliana defended the castle from Royalists however she became ill in 1643 from a cold, that historians have believed to be from stress of defending her home. She died and three months later Royalists returned and sacked the castle. Killing maids and buttlers as well as Brillianas children.
