Language came into being as a result of evolution. Once hominids (probably Homo erectus) gained the capacity for enough energy, they gained certain muscles which allowed them to make a broader range of sounds. The first language was likely used generally for hunting and such so that members of a group could communicate and more efficiently find food and remain safe. Check out "Walking With Cavemen" by BBC, it gives you an entire outlook on the evolution of humans! It is pretty fascinating.

However, globalization has brought about further evolution of languages as each language keeps enhancing its vocabulary and phrase bank as they listen to other languages. For instance, before now, the Igbo language word or phrase for good morning varied from dialect to dialect. Some dialects would say, "I sala chi?"for good morning, while some would go, "Ndewo."Today, having mixed with speakers of English and other languages, most Ibos greet quite differently: "Ututu oma." Ututumeans morning, while oma means good. The Ibo phrase for good morning has so evolved to reflect its equivalent in the international language spoken by many Ibos-- English.

Language likely evolved over time from basic communication signals used by early humans. As social groups grew larger and more complex, so did the need for a more sophisticated form of communication. This led to the development of structured languages to convey thoughts, emotions, and information among individuals.
