The 2 main beasts of burden then, as now, were oxen and horses. Most rural settler-farmers did not own a cow unless the family had a baby or child up to age 5. Oxen plowed fields. A horse could pull a wagon. Mostly only single freemen (free, White, 21 or older) owned a horse.
