How did leprechauns come into the picture?

Just like today, back when civilization first started in Ireland there were midgets. However, back then midgets weren't accepted, so the parents of the midgets would just drop them off in the forest at the age of 5 or 6. Considering their size, it was hard for them to survive. To survive, they would mug lost travellers and take their clothes, food, and money. When they could not find lost travellers, they would feast on wild plants and grubs. This diet caused them to grow orange hair. Eventually a midget society was formed. In this society women made clothes and gathered wild plants and grubs, while the men would mug lost travellers. And since the midgets spend all day in moss covered forests their clothes turn green. The only mystery left about leprechauns is the pot of gold that creates the rainbow. This mystery can be easily explained. What the leprechauns did was put a little pile of gold in a pot then fill it up with water, and put it in a spot of sunlight. The sun would then shine off the water creating the rainbow. The sun also shines off the gold creating the illusion of a full pot of gold. Using this technique, leprechauns would trick more travellers into being mugged.
