The industrial revolution in 18th to 19th century increased manufacture of goods through mass production. The overall effect this had on on plant life was both immediate and long term.

The immediate effects included vast deforestation as trees were cut to make coal to fuel the industries. The industrial revolution also led to an agricultural revolution that changed farming from small scale family-sized operations to large commercial enterprises through the use of machinery. This led to increases in plants based on profitability and a corresponding reduction in variety.
