The extinction of the dinosaurs is thought to have been mainly caused by a dearth of plants that herbivorous dinosaurs consumed in great quantities. On the land, only the smallest creatures such as the shrews (mammals) survived.

The colder climate (impact winter) that is thought to have occurred during the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) extinction was also not as harmful to mammals, whose warm-blooded bodies enabled them to function better than the large cold-blooded reptiles. Marsupials and semi-aquatic mammals were able to dig and burrow to obtain food and shelter.

What accounts for the dinosaurs' rise to dominance at the start of the Jurassic Period?

At the beginning of the Triassic period, a mass extinction wiped out most large land animals. The remaining animals quickly evolved to fill the empty niches, and one line led to the earliest dinosaurs. Another, less severe, mass extinction at the end of the Triassic eliminated the animals that were significant competition to the dinosaurs. With these animals out of the way, dinosaurs quickly diversified to fill the empty niches.

What caused the extinction at the end of the cretaceous period?

many believe this was due to a hugeasteroid (rocky mass that orbits the sun) striking earth- this threw huge amounts of dust and water vapor into the atmosphere, blocking sunlight- killing plants and animals (no dinosaurs survived)

What was the world after death of dinosaurs like?

After the extinction of the dinosaurs, the mammals who survived began to flourish and evolve. They started off small, but evolved much larger and took over the Earth. Before the animals of the modern world, the planet was inhabited by their more primitive cousins. Smilodon (saber-toothed cat) and later, the Wooly Mammoth are some examples.
