The undergrond railroad
Many escaped slaves fled to freedom in the North by relying on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses. They would often travel at night, guided by conductors who led them through a series of hiding places and helped them avoid capture. Once in the North, they sought refuge in abolitionist communities and would typically settle in states where slavery was prohibited.
