How did master chief get the name master chief?

The UNSC made an alliance with the Covenant 'heretics' or 'seperatists' when the arbiter met Sargeant Johnson and Commander Keyes on Delta Halo. When the elites failed to protect the Prophet of Regret from Master Chief, the Prophet of Truth ordered the replacement of the Elite Honour Guards by the Brutes. This sparked anger amongst the Elites, so they fought back against the Covenant 'Loyalists'. Some Grunts and Hunters Joined them. When the heretics showed the Arbiter that the 'Great Journey' was a lie and it would lead to the death of all sentient beings in the galaxy, the Arbiter joined the Heretics' ranks. The Seperatists followed the Arbiter and formed an alliance with the heretics. When the Seperatists learned that Tartarus was trying to activate Delta Halo, they formed an alliance with the UNSC to stop him. Master Chief learned of this alliance when he crash landed on Earth after stowing away on the Forerunner Dreadnaught. Since then, he has teamed up with Arbiter and his elite companions to stop Truth from killing all sentient life in the galaxy.

In order to know you would have to read the first Halo book. I would explain but its been a while since I read it. I think it was becasue he was the leader of the spartans and never showed any fear, as a result was promoted like anyone else in the armed forces.
