Educate and provide public welfare
The motto of Highline Public Schools is 'Educate Every Student and Expect Excellence'.
In the middle ages, there was no public education, and most people did not have the money or spare time with which to pursue an education. The church did not educate the public either, because they found it useful to be the sole custodians of religious knowledge. It was difficult to dispute the authority of the church, with very little knowledge about the church or its doctrine. An illiterate public does not have the resources to analyse religious issues, and therefore is inclined to let the educated clergy think for them.
