Going to college was the most honorable way (college deferment).
The Draft.
The Vietnam War had 16 million men that avoided US military service (dodged the draft).
A few rejected the draft and headed for Canada.
During the Viet war..."draft" meant forcing men into the military. Draft=Conscription. Conscription CAN also occur during peacetime.

Like the Vietnam War, if a man didn't have the money to buy his way out of it, he got inducted (drafted). Wealthy men in the Civil War could purchase men to take their place in the military; wealthy men in the Viet War could hire expensive lawyers or go to colleges (draft deferrments). Poor men in either war had to accept the draft or go to prison.
He needed them to be in the war as a soldier. He needed them to replace the soldiers who had lost their lives-he did not want to loose the war. That is why countries draft.-Round Rupert
