In some ways the Mandans at the mouth of the Knife River were easier for the expedition to befriend than many other native groups, since the tribe had already met white explorers - the French Sieur de la Verendrye in 1738 and the Welshman John Evans in 1796. Trading arrangements had also been established between the Mandans and Spanish and French traders. Lewis and Clark were seen as another opportunity for the tribe to benefit from superior technology.

By 1804 the Mandans were already much reduced by disease and inter-tribal war, so they had every reason to look upon the Corps of Discovery as potential friends and allies against their traditional enemies.

Lewis and Clark always conducted themselves in a courteous and kindly way and were eager to establish good relationships with all the native groups they met; the Mandans were equally friendly.
