Montesquieu was against the abuse of power by the Government. This created division of powers. It's been very effective ever since.
Montesquieu published the book On The Spirit of Laws in 1748, which outlined his ideas on freedom and how government should work. He concluded that a government elected by the people was the best form, but it depended on maintaining the right balance of power. Like Locke, Montesquieu endorsed a separation of powers.
Montesquieu's ideas, particularly his concept of the separation of powers in government, had a significant influence on the drafting of the United States Constitution. His ideas helped shape the system of checks and balances in the U.S. government, which divides power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches.
