If you're referring to the World War, Americans had pursued a policy of neutrality until 1917/1918 when American forces finally agreed to help the Allied forces in Europe. Up until 1917, there was stalemate in which neither the Allies or the Axis Powers could defeat the others. The Americans, unlike the rest of the Allied Forces, were untainted by war and thus brought new energy and increased morale.
