It is hard to answer this when considering the Native Americans in the Western territories. Hundreds of tribes were there and they differed greatly between each tribe with different customs and life styles. The Cheyenne were free roaming hunters that followed the herds of buffalo across the plains. On the other hand the Pueblo were settled farmers. The tribes on the plains depended on the buffalo for food, leather, clothing, rugs, blankets, cups, spoons, and other items made from each animal they killed. Nothing was wasted. During the 1850's and 1860's white hunters did their best to kill off the herds. At the start of the 1800's there was about 60 million buffalo, but by 1850 it had gone down to 20 million. But by 1870 they were nearly gone, and so was the life the Native Americans.
The same way they treated the caribou in Nova Scotia--- THERE ARE NONE LEFT!!!

The Native Americans of the great plains depended on the buffalo. They ate its meat and made their clothing and homes from its skins. White men's guns killed the buffalo depriving the Native Americans of food, clothing, and shelter. White men's cows ate the grass the buffalo needed. White men's fences prevented the buffalo from changing pastures. Thus, the white men made it impossible for the Native Americans to continue their relationship with the buffalo.
