In the early 19th century, people brushed their teeth using rough pieces of meat (most notably beef) which was often available at butchers. The meat was hard enough not to fall apart but soft enough not to harm the teeth. Later an early 'toothbrush' was invented by a French dentist called Jacques Géretier who suggested using a brush and strong alcohol to scrub the teeth and the idea caught on in England in the 1830s. It was in England that the concept developed and people began attaching brushes to long strips of metal to reach teeth further back in the mouth, before the first toothbrush was officially manufactured.

MORE: the above statement is wrong. The Chinese developed the toothbrush in the 15th century. Ancient Egyptian tombs have been found with a form of a toothbrush . In 1780 the first modern form of the toothbrush was developed by an Englishman and in 1844 the first 3 row toothbrush was developed. People have NEVER used meat for cleaning teeth and for over 5,000 years have had some form of tool for the teeth.

Well, of course! It matters on what certain type of tribe or people. But then, I would say most long ago people, (when there weren't toothbrushes), they used twigs. I am answering this honestly, so please do not say no at the bottom where the buttons say yes or no or half. Please say yes, because I researched it. (I even saw a video!)
