In addition, a number of members of the nobility had escaped France in fear of their lives, and were now attempting to get foreign governments to intervene militarily in France and restore Louis as an absolute monarch. Louis hoped to at least make contact with these, even if he did not necessarily agree to the idea of regaining his authority at the hands of foreign troops.
