Consider early man as a developed primate. Primates (like apes and monkeys) eat plants, nuts and berries. Some also hunt. I think we can safely assume early humans did the same: they foraged for nuts and berries, and also hunted for deer, bear, rabbit, fish, snakes, elk and antelope.
