The use of "hello" came well before the phone. It shows up written in 1860 and in daily use. It was the phone that borrowed it, not the other way around. People of many cultures have many ways to greet each other.
to be honest i have no idea.. but seeing as "hello" was around LONG before the telephone i should think that traditionally and most commonly nothing else was used... except when of course people are calling friends not everyone starts with hello.. though most do..
Before 'it' was introduced as a pronoun, people had to specify what they were referring to by using the full name. Or they risked not being understood.
