Legend has it that a Spanish ship carrying horses crashed close to shore. The horses that survived then swam to Assateague island. You can read about this legend in "Misty of Chincoteague."
It wasn't just a shipwreck, when they looked into the ponies ancestors they found many different kinds of horses so in the beginning the researchers thought that farmers took horses to Assateague to avoid taxes on the horses. It was a natural corral. Over time they adapted to the climate and other horses ended up on the island, they may have come from a ship or swam from mainland. There are hundreds of stories how the ponies got there but they are there and thriving.
There are two stories to how the ponies came to the island. The first and most likely untrue story is that a shipwrecked in a storm and the ponies swam there once they escaped the ship. Most likely however farmers set them lose on the island to avoid having to pay heavy taxes on them back in colonial times.
The ponies got to assateague island in this condition:
They where traveling in a boat, captured by people. They were supposed to be Shipped to Spain. The stallion,The leader of the herd,Whines{neighs} loudly,Indicating that a storm was coming their way.The storm does come, and the ship is tossed around like a toy in the large waves. The captain of the ship try's to keep the ship under control,But the ship hit's a very strong wave,Which started to wreck the ship. The ship demolished slowly.A large wave came and destroyed the stall the ponies were in.The ponies looked for the shore of an island,And they swam towards it,Following the leader. They made it and rested.I heard that about two mares were killed by the waves. The rest of the group made themselves at home on Assateague,And lived there since ,about,Near the 1800's.Every year, though, they go to Chingoteague island because that is where they give birth to their foals. After a month of this time,The Herd goes back to assateague island, where they stay until the Mares have to birth their new foals again.People now live in Chingoteague island, and every time the herd heads towards chingoteague island, the people capture some of the ponies. After this pony penning day event, they let the herds go back to assateague island, where they let the foals grow,And it happens over and over again.
Islanders believe that a Spanish Galleon wrecked by the island and the cargo of ponies swam to the island. But most likely they were brought by European explorers
Assateague Island National Seashore was created in 1965.

They live on Assateague Island, and every year they are rounded up, made to swim across the channel over to Chincoteague island, where some are auctioned in order to maintain the number of horses on the island. the rest are released back onto Assateague to live in the wild for another year.

Chincoteague ponies are found in a little island on the side of Virginnia. Chincoteague Ponies are actually found on the small island off the east side of Virginia and Maryland. The island's name is Assateague, so it's ironic that the ponies are called Chincoteague ponies instead of Assateague ponies.
