Priests came about in Catholicism at the Last Supper when Christ said to his apostles, while taking the bread and the wine, "Do this in remembrance of me." Thus by using those words he ordained the twelve apostles priests. As a result in the Catholic Church, the priest is able to perform the Consecration of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ during the Sacrifice of the Mass.

.

Catholic AnswerThere is only one priest in Catholicism, the high priest, Our Blessed Lord, Christ Jesus, the one "mediator between God and men (1 Tim 2:5), the unique "high priest after the order of Melchizedek; (Heb 5:10; cf 6:20; Gen 14:18) The priests thus came about as instituted by Our Blessed Lord, as stated above, at the Last Supper when Our Blessed Lord ordained the Apostles as His first Bishops and instituted the priesthood with them.

from the Catechism of the Catholic Church:1545 The redemptive sacrifice of Christ is unique, accomplished once for all; yet it is made present in the Eucharistic sacrifice of the Church. The same is true of the one priesthood of Christ; it is made present through the ministerial priesthood without diminishing the uniqueness of Christ's priesthood: "Only Christ it the true priest, the others being only his ministers." (St. Thomas Aquinas, Hebr 8, 4)

1547 . . . The ministerial priesthood is a meansby which Christ unceasingly builds up and leads his Church. For this reason it is transmitted by its own sacrament. the sacrament of Holy Orders.
