It didn't . Slaves had to practice any religion in secret and families were often sold away from each other. Children were often as young as 2 years old when they were sold and husband and wives were sold to different people.
It has not been established that African-Americans dopreserve their family heritage more than other American groups.

Because of the horrors of slavery and dehumanization of African Americans' ancestors many haven't a record of their family line and connection to where they are truly from. Some say parts of West Africa, based on DNA, but not all are entirely trusting of that.
