They were a leisured group (they did not work) and were engaged in politics, intellectual pursuits and writing and were patrons of the arts. The equites (cavalrymen, the second highest social rank) were an entrepreneurial group of bankers, money lenders and investors in shipping and mining. Some equites were high civil servants.
