Amundsen disappeared on June 18, 1928 while flying on a rescue mission with Norwegian pilot Leif Dietrichson, French pilot Rene Guilbaud, and three more Frenchmen, looking for missing members of Umberto Nobile's crew, whose new airship Italia had crashed while returning from the North Pole.
As to the North Pole, Roald Amundsen only flew over it in an airship. I'm afraid this does not count as an attainment of a pole.
Roald Amundsen got to the South Pole 1st and just a month later, Robert Falcon Scot made it to the South Pole but sadly died on his journey back because of the cold and hunger.
