To defend against Communist expansion.
France was the only country after WW2 that refused to grant independence to its Asian colonies. Ho Chi Minh had tried to ask the U.S. to help negotiate with the French, but the U.S. refused because he had had communist contacts during WW2. That left no option but a war of independence against France, which as the only military support he could get was from his previous communist contacts Vietnam eventually became a communist nation.
because they felt like it. or They did not seem to fight as hard as their North Vietnamese and NLF counterparts.
The north Vietnamese were fighting with the south Vietnamese because the Viet-min (north) wanted to impliment a communist government and the Viet-cong (south) wanted to remain as they were. The USA interfene and made the whole thing worse.
the Vietnam war was not an American war. we got in it to fight off communism. and the vietcong and north vietnamese worked together to fight us, and south vietnamese were hardly using their army to fight, they were letting us do all of it. and Americans didnt want to go die for a lost cause.

The Communist North Vietnam acting in support and defence of the capitalist South Vietnamese.
The NVA and the VC (North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong).
A communist (North Vietnamese Army) victory united them. The "Non-communist forces" had been conquered (defeated).
President Kennedy sent special forces troops, known as Green Berets, to advise and train South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam War. These troops were sent to help the South Vietnamese government and military fight against communist forces in order to prevent the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.

The Soviet Union (Russia today) and Communist (Red China back then) China supplied the North. While the US supplied the South (Vietnam).
The United States where fighting the North Vietnamese Army to deter communism in South Vietnam. The Chinese also were a part of the conflict however not so much as a direct entity as a funding source for the NVA.

It was a "secret war" which was not the best kept secret. Afghanistan was invaded by the USSR in 1980, and the US supplied the Afghan resistance (called the Mujahideen) with modern firepower to fight them, much as Communist countries supplied the North Vietnamese earlier, without committing their regular forces.
