They had to decide what belongings they really wanted to keep. They had to buy a wagon (with extra axles or wheels) and guns for the purposes of protection and hunting for food. They needed warm clothing for crossing through the mountain passes, as well as bedding and cooking supplies. Many settlers brought along extra horses and/or cows or other livestock. They also had to find a wagon train to join up with, because lone wagons were easy prey for marauding bands of native Americans.
