The people who were left when a town was killed by the plague would work together to support the people who were left. When I lived in Germany I knew a family whose ancestors were one of four families left after the plague hit their area. The survivors divided the town into four sections and the modern family I knew had recently sold the section that their family kept since the plague. Because of the loss of workers and crafts people the survivors stepped in to fill the gaps. This actually created an upward movement for people allowing them to live better.
