On 31st May 1961 a referendum was conducted in South Africa to seek popular opinion regarding establishment of Republic of South Africa. In the referendum majority of voters voted in favor of establishing republic. As a result Queen Elizabeth was stripped of her title of Queen of South Africa and Governor General became president. The referendum was restricted only to white voters and blacks were not allowed to vote.
