The Vietnam War gave students purpose, and the anti-war sentiment encompassed many of the other movements as well (such as civil rights). It unified everyone.
ROTC buildings were located on campus, and were often burned. Students who failed to maintain a 2.0 average faced military conscription. Result: Protests and riots.
The name given to these student protests was the sit-in protests.
It was effective but it took a long time.
The main goal of student protests in the US was to end the Vietnam war and the involuntary drafting of young men into the army. There were also protests against companies that made weaponry.
Student protesters were basically protesting the draft. College deferrments were given to students if they held 18 college credits and maintained a 2.0 average; otherwise they risked being inducted into the military. Student protests, and non-student protests simply added to the confusion that already existed in the 1960's, e.g. assassinations, war, and various civil rights movements taking place.
