The movement away from party politics saw no greater event than the 1972 presidential elections. Richard Nixon garnered 18,000,000 more popular votes than Senator McGovern. And Nixon won 49 of the 50 states. In that particular space in time, party politics were swept aside. Clearly millions of Democrats voted for Nixon. Party politics, an element that George Washington himself disapproved of, seemed to have no bearing on the election.
