How does the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over territory also involve a conflict over ideology?

There are a variety of ideological justifications that are used in both sides of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. Most conspicuously there are the religious ideas found in Judaism vs. Islam. The territory that is under dispute is considered to be sacred by both religions, and therefore, it is thought to be essential for that sacred territory to be in the possession of the correct religious group. Various other ideological elements can be found as well. Jews can claim that they were driven out of Europe by Nazi persecution and therefore have a moral right to return to their traditional home land, while Palestinians can claim that they are the victims of European colonialism. Both sides can claim, correctly, that they were promised this territory by the British Empire which formerly controlled it.
