According to the Muslim historian Muhammad ibn Ishaq, the Muslims "were safely ensconced" in Abyssinia, where they "were grateful for the protection of the Negus (King); could serve Allah without fear; and the Negus had shown them every hospitality." One of the Muslims in Abyssinia wrote this poem.
We have found Allah's country spacious,
giving security from humiliation, shame and low repute.
So do not live a life in humiliation
and shame in death, not safe from blame.
Another reported: "The Negus gave us a kind reception. We safely practised our religion, and we worshipped Allah, and suffered no wrong in word or deed."
According to Muslim 31:6096, another of the Muslims had a very different experience in Abyssinia. She recalled: "We were afar in Abyssinia amongst the enemies ... in constant trouble and dread." She did not, however, elaborate on the nature of the "enmity".
