How did slavery end?

Abolition in…Britain

A group of people called 'Abolitionists' stayed in London trying to persuade the government in particular to end slavery.

This group was only asking for the end to the slave trade at first because they believed in gradual abolition, it was better to take it one step at a time because many of the members of Parliament were plantation owners and would have wanted more slaves. Soon after the slave trade had ended, they started to persuade the government into abolishing slavery in the British Empire as well.

Samuel Sharpe was a slave his entire life but was well educated, other slaves respected him and he became a well known preacher. On 25th December 1831, the Baptist war (also known as the Christmas war) began. It ended after two weeks and the leaders, including Sam, were hung. This caught the interest of some parliamentarians and some people think that the war contributed to the abolition of slavery.

In February 1832, Great Britain appointed a committee to discuss ways of ending slavery.

Slavery in the British Empire was abolished on 31st July 1838.

Abolition in…the Americas

By the early 19th century, virtually all northern blacks were freed under programmes of gradual emancipation. However, in the South most states gained a stronger hold on slavery.

The Civil War had claimed over half a million lives but led to the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished all slavery in the United States.

Slavery in the U.S.A was abolished in 1865.

Sorry this is all I know so far, I'm not sure about the actual slave TRADE though.
