Soon the Russians built the Berlin Wall and stopped all traffic and connection to the Western sections and "checkpoint Charlie" was formed with Western powers on one side and the Russians on the other. The people of East Germany could not freely cross the border or visit family until 1989 when the wall came down.

The Germans greatly wanted to surrender to the Western Allies, not the Soviets!
