The US Public wanted to mind their own business and nothing to do with the war. Then the Japanese did something that Roosevelt was unable to do. They attacked Pearl Harbor and Americans rushed to join the military and fight. It went so far that it was common for men who were considered unfit for military service committed suicide out of frustration or embarrasment.
