The United States Government was afraid that the Russians may be able to weaponize space. Sputnik was physical evidence that they were making progress on "The Final Frontier". It encouraged the US to put all of their effort into their own space program.
The space race played a large part in the cold war, and culminated in the Moon Landing in 1969.
