They earned it like people earn money today: by providing services and goods for others. Naturally barter was more ubiquitous than money, but you'd still encounter coins quite a bit for labor/goods.
Easy answer - they used coins.
Since the different cities were all politically independent they often minted their own coins but they followed a general system of weights such as 'staters', 'tetradrachmas', 'bidrachmas', 'drachmas' and 'obols'. This meant you could spend Athenian coins in other cities or other cities coins in Athens.
A stater was worth a tetradrachma, a tertradrachma worth 2 bidrachmas, a bidrachma worth 2 drachmas and an obol was worth 1/6th of a drachma with smaller coins for buying things like food.
A drachma a day was the average pay for a skilled worker or a soldier, roughly $50 today.
The Roman economy, was a system of barter and community trade. All manner of trade goods, farm products, livestock and services were used as a means of exchange. Within only a few years a new more clearly defined, and easily traded form of coin replaced it. This coinage was likely the primary issue in Rome until about 215 BC. It would eventually evolve into the base unit of Roman currency.
