like all soldiers in a war, if somebody close to you, or just even someone helping you out, who you have never met before, watching them die (in ww1 most probably a sniper rifle in the trenches) you don't think about it, you carry on fighting, only when the fighting is over you can grieve, and not for long, you have to be able to get it over and done with quickly, look on Google "armyjobs.mod.UK" and look on the armyjobs page and you can find a live chat with soldiers, who will have the same views (although they are English soldiers)
